It has been a while since I have put up a blog this season. I have been swamped with projects. I have finally managed to get some artwork done in the background while juggling conventions.
In case anyone is interested a ton of tutorials are up! I am still working on the Dark Magician Girl hat tutorial (sorry I know it is taking a while). If you are interested in the Sailor Saturn Glaive and the Dark Magician Girl Staff head over to the tutorials sections to see how I created each of these weapons.
Now let’s review the past couple of conventions starting with MomoCon.
I was ecstatic to attend this convention in Atlanta, GA. I have always heard great things about it and I finally got to enjoy it. I was surprised to find it smaller than what I was expecting. Not a big deal, I stayed for all 4 days and I managed to stay entertained for the full weekend with all of the panels and tutorials that were going on. Friday I went as Eternal Sailor Saturn, Saturday was Dark Magician Girl (which was entered into the cosplay contest), and Sunday was Jack Frost. Not surprising my feet were DEAD by the end of Sunday X-X. Now, I have a confession to make. As many of you probably know, I am a huge Yu-Gi-Oh fan, and with the 20th anniversary being celebrated this year my fandom is coming out x100 (you can tell by all the youtube videos these past few weeks). Anyway, I attended MomoCon mostly to meet Little Kuriboh who is the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged Series. If you guys have not watched any of these episode, DO IT! On a depressing day they can manage to make me laugh uncontrollably. I was very honed to meet Little Kuriboh (AKA Martin) and attended a few of his panels. I was “star-struck” indeed. Wonderful and sweet man and a joy to listen to. I pretty much bought out his table in the convention hall and now I have hilarious T-shirts with funny phrases taking up space in my wardrobe, haha! It was a blast though.
Pictures with me and Martin, thank you Little Kuriboh if you ever read this! I also have two short videos of me with him… maybe I will upload them to my YouTube account in the next couple of weeks…
Finally, I just came back from Ancient CityCon this past weekend in Jacksonville, FL. This convention has been going on for 10 years now! Incredible. To be honest, I just learned about it only about 1-2 years ago. I only attended for one day but it was an incredible day. I knew upon signing up that this convention is tiny! So the dealer hall was pretty small with the artist ally being even smaller. This would sometimes deter people from going to a convention, but I personally love the small sized conventions. People tend to be nicer and you tend to make a lot of friends. I find most of the time when you go to a huge convention there are the “die hard” fans that run you over to try and get “so and so’s” autograph, and then there is the “famous cosplayer” who sticks their nose up and refuses to be nice to any other cosplayer (you guys know what I am talking about). So when I go to a smaller convention, I feel comfortable to be around friendly people who all share the same thing: a love for anime (which is why we are all there in the first place). To my absolute surprise this was the convention where I won my first big cosplay award for my Sailor Saturn outfit! I won “Best Anime”! Woo!! I was so shocked when they called my name, I am used to cheering for others and snapping photos of the winners walking up to the stage. All of a sudden the roles switch and I get to walk on the stage. I was almost crying…. weird…. one of those “beauty pageant” moments. lol. But it felt great. When you win your first big cosplay award you finally realize that your work finally paid off and people respected that. To be honest, I was starting to wonder about my cosplaying skills and if I was ever good enough to win an award. Finally it happened. It feels good to be rewarded, it gives you the boost you need to continue. So thank you to the judges and the audience for this great honor. Words cannot express how happy I am
Speaking of continuing. I already have two cosplays that are working their way up the list for “next in line”. I even got the wig for one of them (though it will take a lot of styling). So I think I will be doing for 2017 Princess Chibiusa from Sailor Moon (I’m on a Sailor Moon streak for some reason) and a new Cardcaptor Sakura cosplay. I am also thinking of experimenting making wings! Hmm…. sounds hard…. but fun
In the next few weeks I will be heading to Orlando for Anime Festival Orlando. I will be Sailor Saturn on Friday and Dark Magician Girl on Saturday (which will be entered into the cosplay contest). Anyone going? I hope to see some of you there! This will be my last convention for a couple of months as I have to get back to research but I am looking around for some conventions in October and November in my area.
Much love to you all and hope your summers are going well
